The world will be a better place when all books are read through electronic book readers. Books, newspapers, magazine and text books are all made from trees. More often than not, they are made from 100% virgin paper; meaning fresh trees are chopped down to make them. If just 100 persons in your neighborhood were to use an e-book reader to read all their magazines, newspapers and books, approximately 18 trees will be spared for being chopped down every year. It just 10′000 people were to use e-book readers for their reading needs, 6 acres of forest will be saved every year (that’s about the size of 6 football fields).
As far as e-book readers go, the Amazon Kindle (latest generation) is currently the best in the market. It is a wonderful little device for reading books, newspapers and magazines as it is a slim and tiny device, much smaller than your typical paperback (measuring at just 1/3 of an inch in depth).
Using the Amazon Kindle is not only good for the environment, but also very good for you pocket. Soft-copies of books and newspapers are just a fraction of the price of printed versions. With this device, you can access services like Wikipedia and also use its on-board dictionary to check on words that you are not so sure of. It can also double as a basic web-browser and an mp3 player.
No doubt that plastics, metals and glass are used in the production of the Kindle e-book reader. The production of one of these devices may take up more energy that producing a book but its carbon footprint is much lesser than reading the printed media in the long run. Using a solar battery charger to charge the Kindle will even further reduce the carbon footprint of the device.
